Proper Skincare for Your Tattoo

For most getting a tattoo is all about choosing that perfect design or depicting the reason they are getting their ink. Having a tattoo has to be about much more than that if you plan to keep it fresh looking for years to come. To do this you must consider the proper skincare necessary for healthy looking skin which will, in turn, keep your tattoo looking vibrant.

A seasoned tattoo artist always appreciates a well kept canvas on which to work. So don't wait until after you have received your new masterpiece. If you know you will be getting a tattoo in the future, start now with a daily routine for recommended skincare. There are several basic recommendations that are easy to implement into your life that will greatly assist in maintaining healthy skin.

Protect Your Tattoo from the Sun

First and foremost is protection from the sun. Your artist will surely tell you to stay out the sun for a few weeks after getting your tattoo, but why do it just then? Sun damage can age your skin and ultimately affect the look of your tattoo long tern as well. So always use some level of SPF within your skincare routine. Very commonly nowadays there are some levels of SPF in body lotions and skin conditioners. Start there, but if you plan on being in direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time, be sure to use a minimum of SPF 30 and SPF 50 directly on your current tattoos.

NOTE: Don't get sloppy! If there are areas you can't reach or don't apply the sunscreen to cover the entire tattoo you can create uneven fading of your tattoo. Take your skincare as seriously as you do your ink!

Another common oversight in taking good care of your skin is your daily soap. In many areas of the world humidity levels in the air change throughout the year, most commonly when comparing summer to winter. Well, that soap that you use through spring, summer and fall may need to be changed throughout the winter months when air is drier. Switch to a soap with moisturizers built right in. If you can't get away from your favorite soap then follow a shower with a moisturizing lotion during these months.

You are What You Eat

When it comes to healthy skin, it isn't always about what you put on the outside; it is equally as important to ensure certain things are making their way to the inside. Eating healthy and having good cardio make sure the cells that make up your skin have plenty of oxygen and nutrients. Fish strong in omega-3s and good oils, such as Salmon, is a great choice to assist in having the healthiest skin possible. If you don't have the best diet and don't care to, supplement the bad habits with a daily multivitamin or multivitamin pack that includes omega-3s and fish oil supplements.

Overall skin health will prolong the life of your tattoo. Aging will affect the look of your tat, but doing what you can to make sure it is given the best chance for longevity will help you stay healthy and love long, but also keep money in your pocket from having to get touch ups down the road to bring some life back to an old tat.
